Open Access Training Modules
As part of the European Union funded PAVE project, five online and offline training modules were developed for practitioners and local communities to strengthen their ability to promote and support inclusive local multi-stakeholder partnerships in preventing and addressing violent extremism, with group activity exercises, tools and opportunities for self-reflection.
The training modules increase understanding and capacity for creating multi-stakeholder partnerships between civil society, religious actors and government officials to increase community resilience against violent extremism.
This site is offered to you by the PAVE (Preventing and Addressing Violent Extremism through Community Resilience in the Western Balkans and the MENA) project in cooperation with the Network for Religious and Traditional Peacemakers.

How to Use the Modules
Each module is designed in an online format for individual users, or an in-person group format, that is designed to be led by an experienced facilitator. The format of the in-person training module provides the experienced facilitator with a menu of design options to contextualize for his or her specific context and needs. Certificates are available following the completion of each online or offline module.
Module 1:
Discovering Community Vulnerability and Resilience Factors in Addressing Violent Extremism
Training Module 1 of the Preventing and Addressing Violent Extremism (PAVE) project focuses on providing you with findings regarding vulnerability and resilience factors discovered from the PAVE project.
Learning objectives
1) Participants gain an understanding of what the community-level vulnerability and resilience factors are for violent extremism in the project-focus countries and how to analyze their local context from the perspective of these factors.
2) Participants gain an understanding of the different forms of violent extremism and reciprocal extremism. They will explore local multistakeholder level approaches to address these forms of extremism in the online and offline spaces.
3) Participants gain an understanding about the transnational interactions, including impact on and from Europe, contributing to violent extremism.
4) Participants will focus on the role of the diaspora community in engaging in local prevention and countering of violent extremism.

Module 2:
How to Recognize and Address Online Forms of Recruitment, Propaganda and Incitement to Violence
Training Module 2 of the Preventing and Addressing Violent Extremism (PAVE) project will help you recognize and address online forms of recruitment, propaganda and incitement to violence in your efforts to prevent or counter violent extremism in your context.
Learning objectives
1) Participants gain an understanding on key concepts and terms on how online platforms can be utilized to recruit and radicalize individuals and groups to share propaganda and incite violence, directed specifically towards youth, policymakers, civil society and religious actors and institutions.
2) Participants gain an understanding of elements of a counter narrative campaign and how to create their own campaign based on their local context.
3) Participants gain an understanding of how to mitigate risks while using online platforms.

Module 3:
How to Advance Inclusivity Within Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism Community-Based Initiatives
Training Module 3 of the Preventing and Addressing Violent Extremism (PAVE) project will outline ways to be inclusive in your efforts to prevent or counter violent extremism (P/CVE) in your context.
Learning objectives
1) Participants gain an understanding of how to build multi-stakeholder collaboration and trust between actors in mainstreaming inclusivity within their P/CVE efforts.
2) Participants gain an understanding of key concepts related to inclusivity and social norms in the context of P/CVE efforts, including concepts around stereotypes, power dynamics, gender, youth and intersectionality.
3) Participants gain an understanding of how to apply applications of mainstreaming inclusivity within local action plans for P/CVE.

Training Module 4 of the Preventing and Addressing Violent Extremism (PAVE) project will help you to bolster community resilience and multi-stakeholder collaboration to support reintegration to society and disengagement from violent extremism in your efforts to prevent or counter violent extremism in your context.
Learning objectives
1) Participants gain an understanding of how communities can add to resilience or vulnerability to the radicalization of individuals.
2) Participants gain an understanding on key concepts, approaches, and best practices to advance disengagement, deradicalization, and reintegration in multi-stakeholder collaboration (with civil society) and key challenges emerging from practice.

Training Module 5 of the Preventing and Addressing Violent Extremism (PAVE) project will showcase how to bridge partnerships with faith-based actors and institutions in preventing and/or countering violent extremism and support community resilience in your context.
Learning objectives
1) Participants gain an understanding of the important role that faith actors and institutions play in preventing and countering violent extremism.
2) Participants gain an understanding on what polarization is, how it impacts local communities and what strategies local actors can use to identify, diagnose and address polarization, discourse and division.
3) Participants gain an understanding on what the concept of nonviolent communication is and how to utilize and apply nonviolent communication as a skill and tool within communities within P/CVE efforts.
3) Participants gain an understanding of the basic concepts, methodologies, models and tools needed to use intrafaith and interfaith dialogue for peace and reconciliation.

About the PAVE Project
13 partners from 12 countries: The European research project PAVE aims to examine driving and mitigating factors of radicalization and violent extremism in the Balkans and MENA region. In the light of an increase in radicalism and violent extremism in Europe and worldwide, there is a growing need for a common political strategy and effective prevention measures.
PAVE aims to tackle the global issue of radicalization by examining its root causes and driving factors. Based on a participatory and inter-regional approach, we aim to advance evidence-based knowledge on violent extremism in the broader Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and the Western Balkans, and to strengthen the capacity of policy-makers and community leaders for an effective prevention strategy between the European Union and its neighborhood.
