PAVE Project Hosts Final Conference in Brussels

As the three year EU Horizon 2020-Funded ‘Preventing and Addressing Violent Extremism through Community Resilience in the Western Balkans and the MENA’ (PAVE) project officially concludes, project partners convened in Brussels to review the main outputs of the project and officially launch five training modules developed by the Network for Religious and Traditional Peacemakers.
The project sought to address the global issue of radicalization by examining its root causes and driving factors with a focus on community-level resilience and vulnerability factors analysis. Research conducted in selected municipalities of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Tunisia, North Macedonia, Iraq, Serbia, and Lebanon, revealed that the integration of multi-stakeholder approaches within community and national policies and programs help to prevent and counter violent extremism and strengthen community resilience to violent extremist radicalization and recruitment.
Launch of Training Modules
Five online and offline training modules were developed for practitioners and local communities to strengthen their ability to promote and support inclusive local multi-stakeholder partnerships in preventing and addressing violent extremism, with group activity exercises, tools and opportunities for self-reflection.
The training modules increase understanding and capacity for creating multi-stakeholder partnerships between civil society, religious actors and government officials to increase community resilience against violent extremism.
Launch of Policy Guidelines
In utilizing the research findings, the Network for Religious and Traditional Peacemakers developed Policy Guidelines for Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration for Supporting Community Resilience. The six policy guidelines offer concrete recommendations for designing and implementing coordinated multi-stakeholder approaches for the prevention of violent extremism to be used by policymakers, practitioners, faith-based actors and organizations, and civil society actors working in cooperation at the local level.

Joint Research Conference Between PAVE and PREVEX
As the EU Horizon 2020-funded projects PAVE and PREVEX are coming to a close, researchers from both projects presented key findings, and discussed the joint policy recommendations on the prevention of violent extremism (PVE).
PAVE and PREVEX have worked on issues concerning radicalisation, journeys to extremism, and community resilience in the Western Balkans, the Middle East, North Africa, and the Sahel for over three years. Joining forces in a final conference allowed them to show the depth of the research of the two projects, present concrete policy outputs resulting from the research, and build on the important synergies that have emerged. About the PAVE Project
13 partners from 12 countries: The European research project PAVE aims to examine driving and mitigating factors of radicalization and violent extremism in the Balkans and MENA region. In the light of an increase in radicalism and violent extremism in Europe and worldwide, there is a growing need for a common political strategy and effective prevention measures.
PAVE aims to tackle the global issue of radicalization by examining its root causes and driving factors. Based on a participatory and inter-regional approach, we aim to advance evidence-based knowledge on violent extremism in the broader Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and the Western Balkans, and to strengthen the capacity of policy-makers and community leaders for an effective prevention strategy between the European Union and its neighborhood.
